But the Barrasford born former Black Cats defender fought back and has now set up a company to help schools and businesses benefit from his years of sporting experience.
"I write my own unique programmes tailored to what people need and my background in training and management gives me the skills required to develop these programmes. I bring 40 years of life experience to the business which I guarantee is more useful than any text book.
He said: "Pub tenants who are not experts on business development, financial controls or investment can seek my help. I've spent a large portion of my life working for a large scale brewery and the pub industry is very much what I'm about.

"My kids have all been through school and the teachers are run ragged," he said. "I have my level four teaching diploma and all the coaching badges I need, but none of it counts for life experience. I'm big on traditional values like trust, respect and honesty and I hope schools can be the hub of the community as they once were."
"All I ever wanted to do was play for Sunderland," said Maurice. "I owe a lot to Lennie and Pop for getting me there."
"It was all going so well until one day during a semi final I saw, from the corner of my eye, a big guy hurtling towards me.
